VP Rules and Guidelines ~ Updated 1/2/06 « Thread Started on Sept 18, 2005, 7:40pm »
Welcome, one and all to Viewers’ Pick. This forum has but one goal – to be a community where people can come and discuss video games, movies, music, and anything that strikes their fancy. This is a fairly small board, so it’s not hard for our staff to keep things under control, but still, the basic rules apply. Things like no spamming, trolling, flaming and all that crap. But, since we are a small community, we’d like to encourage all our members to drop our name wherever they go. It’s like the difference between Yahoo and Google – Yahoo got where it is today by way of media advertising, whereas Google got to where it is today by advertising through word of mouth. If we can, we’d like to become like Google.
Not too many members are aware of the rules and or guidelines of VP. So here’s a list of all the stuff you need to be wary of.
Table of Contents:
Proboards T.O.S. Other Rules The Board Wars Glitches and other stuff Coding FAQ Suspensions and Bans
Proboards T.O.S.: Viewers' Pick does not make all the rules. I know that's hard to believe but we have rules we must follow as well or we'll be in violation to Proboards. To read these rules visit this link. Terms of Services
Other Rules: VP does in fact have rules to follow. The number one rule is that if at any time we feel your jeopardizing the community of the boards, we will ban you. Also, while each board has certain board-specific rules, here are the other general rules of VP:
~Do not post threads in the Public Announcements section unless it's important to the boards.
~User accounts that have been inactive for one week or more will be sent an E-mail warning the user to either return and begin posting again, or if extenuating circumstances apply, to either E-mail or PM a staff member as exceptions can be made. If neither of these conditions are met after one week of the sending of the warning the offending account will be deleted. This is important to understand because once we delete your account, it cannot be retrieved! The only action we can take to semi-retrieve it is to wait for you to create a new account, and then we can have you use the same old username and change your post counts so they match as they did before your original account was deleted.
~Rule of thumb concerning language: “If it’s censored on basic cable television, don’t say it.” There is a language filter in place, but dodging the filter with creative spelling will get you in trouble. Sexually suggestive language isn't allowed, either. (Thanks to PaladinBlue for allowing us to use this; he was the one who wrote it originally.)
~The rating system here at Viewers' Pick for games will be 10/10. The reason being is this allows for a more specific rating. It can go into the decimals and avoids any confusion. The rating for movies is out of 5 stars.
~Please do not bother asking to be a mod as the only way for you to be a mod is that we find we need more control (and as of 18-9-2005 we don’t) and find you suitable from your characteristics portrayed through your posts and that you are responsible and mature enough for the position.
~If you ever come across a thread that is fairly old and locked but you must absolutely, positively, add your superbly, fantastic, great and superior opinion to it, PM a staff member; we may open it back up. Of course we would like for that one post to re-spark the thread so that the conversation in it continues after the one post you make. Make sure you consider the preceding criteria before sending a PM to a staff member.
~Avatar guidelines are as follows: The image cannot be more than 100 by 100 pixels, can be animated, and must adhere to the board’s guidelines. Staff can and will declare any avatar they deem unacceptable as such.
UPDATED: ~Signature guidelines are as follows: Only one image in your sig, maximum of 500 by 100 pixels in size, and animations are allowed. Animated sigs must be between 200 and 500 kb in size. As with avys, staff can and will declare any sig they deem unacceptable as such.
~Usernames, like sigs and avys, are subject to VP's guidelines. The staff reserve the right to declare any screenname unacceptable.
~Do not make a post complaining about your post disappearing and or being deleted; this will be treated as spam. If you have any problems PM a staff member.
~Off topic posts are okay but too many of them are not. Please try and keep off topic levels down.
~ Telling someone to "Piss off" or anything is not tolerated here. If anyone is caught saying something like that to anyone, they will be suspended for a week, depending on what way they said it. Now, if there's someone spamming a board, you are entitled to try and get them to stop, usually by telling them to shut up. But do it outside the public. PMs or some other place outside VP will do, because then it will basically stop being our business. Also, we'd prefer it if you left it to the staff to take care of people like that. After all, that is what we're here for.
~If a staff tells you to do something or correct yourself in some manner, then you'd best do it. Now, if you find a flaw in the logic or correct him on a misunderstanding of what the staff member said, then you can correct him respectfully. But otherwise just do what you were advised to do.
~ We'd like it if you would respect every member on here, but of course there's going to be people you just can't stand and will refuse to do so to them. So, we'll make it a teeny bit easier for you guys. Please respect all the members that deserve respect, a.k.a. staff, vets, and any contributor to the board. They've most likely been around long enough to earn some place amongst the boards. It's also safe to say that trying to publicly humiliate a person somehow is out of the question, but a joke would most likely be fine. Then again, that'd be retarded to try that anyway.
~Images made in normal posts cannot exceed a size of 800 by 600 pixels, otherwise they will be replaced with links; this is to remain 56k friendly and to keep from forcing the forum to “shapeshift” to accommodate the pics.
~Anything not mentioned here can still get you in trouble. Staff do have the authority to make judgement calls when necessary; so if you think it’ll get you in trouble, don’t do it. If you’re not sure, PM a staff member.
The Board Wars: A lot of our members will remember the controversy of these. Let me say that Board Wars are only allowed in a BW thread created by staff. Constantly members have been spamming up the other boards with this crap. Let me say that it has got to stop. We've been pretty lenient but we're starting to crack down.
Glitches and other Stuff: Yes we're not perfect. We do have some glitches. Report them in this thread. Glitches
Coding FAQ: A lot of people here don't know the right codes to use. So here it is; an FAQ on coding. Here you'll find a list of what the does look like and what they do. When you use a code you'll have to remove the spaces in the brackets, but it stays the same besides that.
[ b] Bold [ /b] = Bold
[ i] Italic [ /i] = Italic
[ u] Underline [ /u] = Underline
[ s] Strikeout [ /s] = Strikeout
[ move] Moving [ /move] =
[ color=*Insert the color you want*] Text [ /color] = Text
[ email=*insert address*] Email Link [ /email] = Email Link
Suspensions and Bans: Finally this thing has been updated to incorporate the new features for v4. Such as suspensions, and the karma feature. With this is a list of all the things you shouldn't do, and the consequences that come with them. Let me tell you that a mod can and will give punishments they think suitable. This is just basic, not set in stone. There are also other things that they will suspend or ban you for.
Suspensions and Bans:
1-3 Days:
Small Flaming Jacking a thread Small Board War One Word or Smiley Spamming
3-6 Days:
Moderate Flaming Moderate Spamming Hijacking three or more threads. Moderate Board War
6 or more Days and a possible Ban:
Consistent Spamming Creating Fake Accounts to cause problems Heavily Flaming a Mod or Member Heavily Hijacking threads Heavily Starting Board Wars Abusing the Karma Feature
Instant Ban:
Posting links or pictures to porn and or things that break Proboards T.O.S. Attempting to Hack the Boards Threatening a Member's life in a serious manner Consistent Assault or Flaming on a Mod or Member.
Those are the main ones toy around a bit until you get them.
That's all you really need to know about VP. Feel free to email the staff at any time if you have things to add or comment on. Thanks again for your membership here!
Sincerely, The Staff of Viewers’ Pick
P.S. Uber kudos to Ani - he's the one who put most of this together.
